We drive through the eastern valley of Oaxaca to the lovely rural town of Teotitlan del Valle at about 40 minutes drive from Oaxaca centro.

 

You will hike the Pico Picacho, a moderate hike, starting from the beautiful calm waters of the lake by the village dam, where we will observe many birds and wildlife.... and then off on our treck to the top!

As we go up we will take time to discover and observe the many birds as well as the beautiful cacti, agaves and other plants in this dry landscape. Looking back every so often we digest the view that spans across the whole valley and the many mystical mountain tops in the distance.

 

Yolanda and her family, Jacinto and their two daughters are waiting for us in their house at the end of the trail. The family invites us in to learn about their trade. Oozing with passion for their craft we see how determined they are to keep the weaving tradition going through the generations and share it with us.

From raw sheep whool to colored threads and finally beautiful bright carpets, you will learn about the process of dying and weaving on traditional loom.

After the demo you will get a chance to try it out by yourself guided by the expert. Yolanda prepares a delicious meal for us in her house. You cannot leave without falling in love with their beautiful rugs!

 

We will then visit the center of the village and the church and enjoy a stunning view from the roof. Maritza and her family will be waiting for us with hot melted wax to show you how her and her family make candles and decorate them using wooden molds: up to 10kg candle for a wedding!

She will also explain the fascinating and unique tradition of the village describing what family members have to bring to the weddings: it’s a beautiful and delightful visit.
