We drive through the eastern valley of Oaxaca to the lovely rural town of Teotitlan del Valle at about 40 minutes drive from Oaxaca centro. 

You will hike the Pico Picacho, a moderate hike with stunning views and wildlife to observe!

After a well-deserved local lunch, the family of Josefina invites us in to learn about their trade. Oozing with passion for their craft we see how determined they are to keep the weaving tradition going through the generations and share it with us.

​

From raw sheep wool to colored threads and finally beautiful bright carpets, you will learn about the process of dying and weaving on a traditional loom.

​​​Also fascinating, the unique tradition of the village of candle making and wax decorations for special events in town. Another demonstration, hands on with local artesanos of Teotitlan del Valle.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:  This tour supports the Bird Monitoring Program TIERRA DE AVES.  For each art hike booked with us, we donate $50 pesos per person to the non-profit Tierra de Aves, helping in their scientific and bird conservation activities in Oaxaca.

 

*FUN FOR KIDS: This tour is highly recommended for kids. We will adapt the hike for Kids, staying at a low elevation. Kids love watching birds using binoculars as well as the hands-on part of this tour learning how to use the pedal loom and making themselves a colorful little square piece of rug.​​​​
