A Birdwatching Journey through the Sierra SUR
📍 Location: Oaxaca - Sierra Sur - Coast
Embark on an unforgettable expedition from Oaxaca’s valley to the Pacific coast, traversing the breathtaking landscapes of the Sierra Norte. This immersive birdwatching adventure takes you through diverse ecosystems, from high-altitude pine forests to cloud forests and tropical lowlands, unveiling an extraordinary array of bird species, including many endemic to Mexico.
Our journey begins in Oaxaca central valley the early morning, you will be exploring the area to those hidden places where we can find endemic species like: Oaxaca Sparrow, Slaty Vireo, Bridled Sparrow, Ocellated Thrasher, White-throated Towhee and more!
Continuing south we will ascend into the lush Sierra SUR, where the crisp mountain air carries the calls of the Red Warbler, Dwarf Jay, Gray-barred Wren, Mountain Trogon, local Vireos and Euphonias.
Winding our way down towards the coastal foothills, we transition into subtropical and dry forests, where the birdlife changes dramatically. Parakeets, motmots, and caciques become more abundant, with a chance to observe Wagler's Toucanet, endemic Blue-capped Hummingbird, Mottled Owl, Green Jays while the calls of the Citreoline Trogon and Orange-breasted Bunting echo through the trees.
On the coast we will discover shore birds and mangrove birds during stunning boat tours in both habitats: booby, tern, storks, herons, wild ducks, blue-winged teals, pelicans, king-fishers, among others.
This journey is more than just a birdwatching experience; it is an exploration of Oaxaca’s rich biodiversity and the incredible variety of habitats that make it a haven for bird lovers.
