RUGS & RED POTTERY
Tradition, creativity and women's empowerment
📍 Location: Teotitlan del Valle & San Marcos Tlapazola
This enriching journey begins in Teotitlán del Valle, a village renowned for its rich weaving heritage. Here, we will visit Mujeres que Tejen, a cooperative of 12 women weavers who will share their inspiring story.
Learn how they preserve ancestral techniques while promoting women’s empowerment within their community.
Discover the art of weaving using natural dyes on wool, and explore each step of the process—from preparing raw fibers to creating vibrant colors with ingredients such as cochineal and indigo. You’ll also have the opportunity to witness demonstrations and engage with the artisans in their workshop.
A traditional lunch will be served in a local home, offering a chance to enjoy authentic Oaxacan flavors and warm hospitality.
In the afternoon, we continue to San Marcos Tlapazola to visit Mujeres del Barro Rojo, a collective of women artisans dedicated to preserving the tradition of red clay pottery. They will guide us through their craft, sharing their techniques, stories, and the cultural significance of their work.
Throughout the day, you’ll meet inspiring women who are not only preserving their cultural heritage but also shaping a more independent and empowered future for their communities.
